Adopting a Dog: My Spitz and a New Way of Loving
I adopted a little dog!
Cats have always been a part of my life, a natural part of being. Their quiet freedom and almost aristocratic independence resonate with my own temperament. A few stolen caresses, a moment of play, then long stretches of tranquility: their presence is one of restraint and balance.
They fascinate and inspire me. Without justification, they allow themselves everything the moment demands: sleeping for hours on end, suddenly leaping about, observing, hunting, disappearing into their invisible thoughts. Their reign on the internet is merely a modern echo of an older truth: they are admired, they are forgiven everything. In my eyes, they are the messengers of a forgotten art of living—that of letting go, of the quiet elegance of existing without constraint.
Yet, over the years, another dream whispered within me: to adopt a Pomeranian. I had discovered them through the mischievousness of a television series, then through the endearing fame of Boo, the little dog who became an icon of gentleness. But this desire remained suspended, as if unattainable. I was convinced that their needs and their liveliness would clash with my love of freedom, that the constraints would prevail over the impulse.
And then Vickie came into our lives.
A small black Spitz, a cousin of the Pomeranian, she brought with her a whirlwind of light. A joyful energy has entered the house, disrupting the sovereign serenity of our cats, who observe her with a mixture of astonishment and resignation. She is a living spark, an inexhaustible source of happiness.
Walking her has become an enchanting ritual: she attracts attention, brings smiles, and melts hearts, regardless of age. Her sweet little face possesses that rare power to momentarily suspend the world's worries.
Like a subtle spell, she offers passersby a second of free tenderness—a tiny daily miracle.
Quick-witted and mischievous, she learns with astonishing speed. A little rascal with sparkling eyes, always ready to invent a game or a prank. But beyond her mischief, she embodies above all a simple and profound lesson: pure love. She lives each moment with a disarming intensity, celebrates my return as if it were a reunion after years, and overflows with enthusiasm for the smallest discovery.
By her side, I understood that questioning one's certainties is not a weakness, but a door ajar to unexpected joys. Sometimes, all it takes is daring to cross that threshold to see life take on a new light.
